Watching it come together…

0

Tonight I was looking on over the class from the side of the mat.  I saw many good things.  I saw many techniques being tried and exicuted: both new and old techniques.   This is good.  This is awsome!  This is what jiu-jitsu is about.  I am glad to see this.  I am very pleased to see the progress.  I am glad to see it “come together.”  I am excited to see the new jiu-jitsu practitioners grow.

Sitting With Purpose

1

So occassionally I have this problem like most people and have come to absolutely hate sitting for a round while grappling. I can give you any number of reasons, but most off I get cold. Without noticing I have slowly become so absorbed in my own grappling that I have forgot to look outside my own grappling. I’ll admit it! The people that make me better aren’t necessarily just Fabio, the upper belts or even myself . The people who make me better are those that I train with. So I have come to a revelation that not only is it important to grapple, but it is also important to sit out and take a view at those people from the outside. I have always known this to be true, but I took notice tonight in particular how much I may have lost track of this.  It is just as important as grappling itself. Think of it as a study session. Tonight I watched how Paul used leverage in a completely different manner as I may have and thought that I might just take a page out of his book.

Don’t just keep your eye on the higher belts either, sometimes it’s great to see what those newer to bjj are doing. Watching them can be great for putting together tendancies for people without as much experience. They move in different ways. Crazy ways and sometimes they do things that they don’t even understand they did. So keep your eyes open. This is important to not only learn from yourself, but to learn from others as well. It accelerates the learning curve and gives a new meaning to sitting out. So next time you are sitting on the sides and goofing around or doing whatever else just think about what you might be missing on the mat. Focus on how someone else opens guard or passes it. Watch how they postion their hands in side control, where their knees are. Watch how they move through combinations or shift another persons weight. The people in front of you grappling make you better. Use them wisely and don’t take that for granted. Don’t be so absorbed in your own style or method that you never change. If you do not change you do not grow. So watch and learn. Try something you see someone use and tailor it to your game. The more options you have the better your game will be. So take in as much as you can…and not on youtube. See you on the mat and on the sidelines. It’s ok to sit! And I will be sitting with a new purpose for myself…To continuously improve my game.

Defense…do you have it?

2

Just a thought…

How is your defense?  Is it good?  Can you defend a rear-naked choke?  Most of you are thinking…sure.

Now…can you defend it effectively?  Some of you are thinking…mmm…probably.

Alright…that’s good.  Now…are you willing to test your probably?  Are you willing to defend it on the street by an attacker?  If so, great!  For the rest of us that don’t have an ”S” on our chest, lets discuss good practical training.

When was the last time you were in a rear-naked choke?  Did you escape with ease?  Probably not.  You were probably stuck…saying to yourself a few choice words.  Think about this…wouldn’t it be smart to allow your training partner to get the choke so you can train escaping?  I ask this because…I’m crazy?  No…it’s better for your partner to get the choke and practice your escape than for a thug on the street to get it and put you to sleep.

My point is just simply this:  you need to train both…your attacks and escapes.  And…you need to do it everyday you train.  Let your partner get the submission and then practice your escape.  This way you both are training.  Your training more.  And…you are getting better as you train.  It is a whole lot safer to train, try, and get caught in positions or submissions in the academy than on the street.

Promotion, am I ready?

2

For those who just started training Bjj, are you ready for promotion?  I am sure some of you are asking the same question.  Well, let’s find out:  If you’re using strength during grappling,  you’re not ready.  If you stop moving during your 5 minutes of grappling, you’re not ready.  If you’re not attacking and defending at the same time while you’re grappling, you’re not ready.  While practicing position-of-the-day you stop to kick back and relax, you’re not ready.  If you’re not helping your partner, you’re not ready.  If you’re worried about “tapping”, you’re surely not ready.

Here are some fundamental rules of advancement:

Rule one: don’t worry about the belt.  Focus on trying new things and moving more fluid during your training.  Try the position-of-the day when you’re  grappling.

Rule two: don’t worry about tapping.  If you are not “tapping”, you are not learning–PERIOD!  Enough said!

Rule three: just don’t worry!  Come to train, train hard, and enjoy your training.  By doing this, you will see the most results ever.

Grappling with Injury…

2

This is one of the hardest decisions to make, but to me it’s a no brainer, unless of course it’s myself …lol.  I know first hand how hard it is to go to bjj class and not train, for me virtually impossible. I always want to push myself even when I shouldn’t. There are times in training where your body just “needs the rest”, the break away will bring you back to the game refreshed and most of all healthier. I always tell you guys to always tap and if you have an injury to stay away… It’s easy to tell someone that, but I’m finding it hard to do just that. My knee has been killing me from a bullsh*t position I got caught in and couldn’t tap quick enough for ;) and I’m struggling with this same problem of whether to train or not.  I have toughed it out and the knee is feeling half way decent, but in retrospect I wish I would have taken my own advice and just taken that time to break away. If you train jiu-jitsu for any amount of time it is inevidible that you will have some sort of injury in time. Even if it’s something as simple as a jammed finger or toe, this is the time to sit back and evalute your progress and ask if it’s time to take a break and get well. Come back with fire in your eyes and a new sense of wonder for the art.Your health is most important and all it takes is one crazy injury and anyone can be out of the game, so take care of yourself and your partner , tap often, and don’t be a hero… There will be plenty more classes to come if you can keep this in mind.

Training

3

Ideally, you want to train with an open mind.  You want to walk onto the mat ready to absorb.  Clear your head and be ready to focus on drills and positions.  When you grapple with your partner, focus on your transitions as this is important.  Flow with your partner, not fight against them.  Pushing and pulling is not technique.  Don’t worry about getting submitted.  Remember if you are not tapping, you are not learning.  Another thing: if you have to use strength to get a submission or position, you are not using technique.  Jiu-Jitsu is about “technique.”

I’m Really Happy About the Progress

0

I don’t want to mention any names, but I’m really excited about the quality of jiu-jitsu I’m seeing around the academy. I’m starting to see some people who are developing their own style. I see more intention in our motion and the effort is unbelieveable. Some of you are becoming maniacs…kinda like Mark…he’s the only one I’ll name because everyone knows he is. I like the fire in all of your eyes, the desire to really master technique and throw all of the other things to the curb.

It will still be time, but I think we a getting closer by the day. I’m truly excited and happy about the progress we are making as a school and I consider each and every one of you a great asset to this academy’s growth in the future. Until next time remember to always opt for position over submission and to attack and defend with your every motion. Put meaning to these motions and you’ll find that they are the truths of jiu-jitsu…

The New Jiu Jitsu Academy

2

Wow, I just wrote you all a whole big blog about our new school and for some reason when I went to publish it…it disappeared.gone!!! Well, I’ll try to write it again. The new school is finally getting somewhere. The last few days were spent on the deconstruction of the unit…tearing down walls, ripping up carpet (Dana’s idea), etc. Well long story short the building process has finally begun; fresh paint is on the walls, the new mats will be here Thursday, I’m installing a nice sound system, and I’m excited for allot of reasons, but mainly just thinking about what this academy is on the verge of becoming. I’m ready to take this place to the next level.

It’s been such a huge blessing for me so far and hopefully for each one of you as well, but just thinking about the impact we’re going to have in these coming months on the people in Apollo Beach and neighboring South shore areas really excites me. I hope you guys are ready to help me step it up in here and bring some new faces to the mats. I want everyone to think of our name when they think of Apollo Beach…I want people to know who we are, what we do and the values this academy stands for. We are not an academy divided like so many others…we are an academy united and here for one another …here to get better and to help others get better. That’s All… Let’s shed some light on this town and let them know that real Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is here…
